Hangar 5 Deep Retrofit, Renovation and Seismic Upgrade
< Back to projects

Location: Naval Air Station Whidbey Island, Oak Harbor Washington

This $51 million deep retrofit project involved the complete renovation, including comprehensive interior design, of the 250,000 square foot historic Hangar 5. The project spanned two years of funding and required extensive phasing and collaboration with the Washington State Historical Preservation Office (SHPO). Complete seismic, mechanical and electrical systems upgrades were installed, and a complete re-programming of the facility was required to support the incoming F-18 electronic warfare squadrons. This renovation also raised the existing building to current federal Anti-Terrorism Force Protection (ATFP) Standards and boasted an environmentally responsible design, including building reuse, construction waste management, and low emitting materials. This project received the 2009 SAME Gold Award for Design Excellence.
