State-of-the-art battery energy storage system a Project of the Year finalist

October 2017

HAILEY, Idaho (October 27, 2017) ‒ The editors of Power Engineering and Renewable Energy World magazines have named Imperial Irrigation District’s battery energy storage system a finalist in the 2017 Project of the Year awards.

IID put the 30-megawatt, 20-megawatt-hour lithium-ion battery energy storage system, or BESS, into operation last fall, assisted by state-of-the-art engineering expertise from POWER Engineers Incorporated (POWER).

The BESS improves IID’s ability to effectively manage the mix of renewable energy sources coming onto the modern grid and puts IID on the forefront of the energy industry’s technological evolution. The BESS is one of the largest such systems in operation in the western United States.

POWER’s services included technical analysis modeling at two sites to evaluate the potential effects of a BESS on Imperial’s and neighboring transmission systems. POWER assisted Imperial in determining the optimal BESS size and also recommended operating scenarios, such as solar generation smoothing, VAR support, black start capabilities and spinning reserve. Owner’s engineer services supported the successful design of the project. POWER also generated the BESS technical specifications for the request for proposal.

POWER Constructors, POWER’s subsidiary for design-build and other construction projects, served as construction monitor.

POWER brought to the project its considerable experience with energy storage systems, which are critical to the effective use of renewable energy. POWER also has extensive expertise with renewable energy sources such as wind, solar, geothermal and biomass. This expertise includes integrating renewable sources into microgrids, utility power grids and within regional transmission organizations across the country.

For the 2017 Project of the Year awards, Power Engineering and Renewable Energy World magazines selected 14 outstanding power projects from industry-nominated projects in five categories: Coal, Combined Heat & Power (CHP), Energy Storage, Natural Gas and Renewables.

The winning projects in each category will be announced Dec. 5 during the keynote session at POWER-GEN International 2017 at the Las Vegas Convention Center. More than 1,400 exhibiting companies from every sector of the industry will be showcasing their products and services on the exhibit floor.
