POWER Engineers Wins Award of Merit for Power Plant Project

February 2003

BOISE, ID — POWER Engineers recently won the 2002 Award of Merit for an Industrial Project for the Calpine Bethpage Power Plant as part of the New York Construction News Best of 2002 Awards. The reasons cited for the award were “excellent execution of the project by the contractor” and meeting the demanding four-month project schedule.

As design engineer, POWER Engineers was part of a team that designed and constructed a $21 million gas-fired simple-cycle peaking plant within 100 days. Under the guiding principle of “teamwork” agreed to at the onset of the project, the team successfully installed the peaking unit to meet Long Island Power Authority’s (LIPA) critical summer power demand. In addition to the expedited schedule, the team had to fit the plant, which includes a General Electric LM 6000 turbine generator set, into an extremely small site with limited access.

A design team from POWER Engineers’ Boise, Idaho, office led the design effort. The peaking plant is owned by Calpine Corporation (San Jose, CA). Slattery Skanska (Whitestone, NY) acted as general contractor. GE Energy Services (Schenectady, NY) supplied the combustion turbine and Nooter/Erikson (Fenton, MO) provided the Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) system and ductwork.

With the new turbine in operation, the Bethpage Energy Center can generate more than 100 MW of power — 54 MW of baseload from the existing unit and 48 MW of peaking capacity from the new unit — for Long Island electricity customers. The new unit is among the most efficient and cleanest facilities of its type due to the use of a SCR system and oxidation catalyst used to reduce air emissions. Summer output is maximized through the use of inlet air chilling.
