POWER-designed Towantic Energy Center enters commercial operation
HAILEY, Idaho (July 2, 2018) — POWER Engineers congratulates Competitive Power Ventures (CPV) and Gemma Power Systems, LLC (GPS) on the completion and commercial operation of the Towantic Energy Center, an 805 MW state-of-the-art combined-cycle electric generating facility located in Oxford, Connecticut. POWER provided detailed engineering and design of the facility to GPS.
The CPV Towantic Energy Center is a natural gas-fueled, 2×1 combined-cycle power plant consisting of two high-efficiency General Electric 7HA.01 combustion turbine generators, two heat recovery steam generators and one GE steam turbine generator with an air-cooled condenser. Engineering began in December 2015 and substantial completion was achieved in May 2018, an impressive 29 months from notice-to-proceed. The facility entered commercial service on May 21. The Towantic project is the fourth state-of-the-art “H-Class” combined-cycle facility to be designed by POWER for Gemma.
“It was a privilege to work with CPV and Gemma on the Towantic Energy Center project,” said Gerry Murray, Executive Vice President of POWER Engineers. “To bring this plant on-line and meet its completion schedule is a great achievement for which we are all proud.”
