Top electric utility managers, engineers wrap up successful conference in Sun Valley

HAILEY, Idaho (March 5, 2020) ‒ Addressing challenges from renewable energy sources, wildfire risks, extreme weather and advanced grid technology were among important topics of discussion this week at POWER Engineers Incorporated’s (POWER) 30th annual Power Delivery Design conference.

The conference is held at the Sun Valley ski resort just north of the company’s Idaho headquarters. It brings together industry leaders from across the country to share best practices and find new ways to cut costs, streamline operations and drive change to improve operations.

This year’s sold-out conference featured Mark McVey, principal engineer at Dominion Energy, which supplies electricity in parts of Virginia, North Carolina and South Carolina. McVey shared his perspective on meeting the challenges and seizing the opportunities of a changing energy landscape.

Catastrophic wildfires, such as have been seen in California, also provoked lively discussions about how utilities can effectively design their systems to prevent them from accidentally sparking a fire. This process of fire hardening and risk mitigation is a growing concern for utilities, especially in the West.

A panel of experts from POWER, Dominion Energy, Google, Oncor Electric Delivery and Ameren discussed the effects of disruptive technology on tomorrow’s electric grid. Other important topics of discussion included renewable energy resources, electric vehicles and modernizing the grid.

“Exploring new ideas and technologies each year is a critical function for those tasked with ensuring our electric grid remains strong,” said Randy Grass, the conference’s emcee and POWER senior vice president. “We want attendees to walk away with specific actions they can take now to improve their projects or current business practices.”

The 2021 conference will be held March 3-4 in Sun Valley, Idaho. Energy executives, utility managers and engineers should call their POWER contact or email conference organizer Sara McClarin at for an invitation.
